To Mark the 35th Anniversary of Ukraine’s Independence, Bohdan Kistiakivskyi’s Magnum Opus “Social Sciences and Law” Is Published for the First Time with the Support of Vasil Kisil & Partners
24/08/2026To mark the 35th anniversary of Ukraine’s independence, we are bringing renewed recognition to the name and legacy of Bohdan Kistiakivskyi (1868–1920), a distinguished Ukrainian scholar, public figure and statesman.
With the support of Dr. Kisil Memorial Fund established by Vasil Kisil & Partners in 2020, Osnovy Publishing will publish his magnum opus, Social Sciences and Law, for the first time in Ukrainian and in Ukraine.
The decision to mark the anniversary of Ukraine’s independence with this publication is no coincidence. Kistiakivskyi contributed to Ukrainian state-building during the Hetmanate in 1918, when he was appointed General Judge of the Administrative Department of the General Court of the Ukrainian State. That same year, he joined the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences’ Commission for the Study of Ukrainian Customary Law, and in 1919 he was elected a full member of the Academy.
Academician Fedir Taranovskyi once described Kistiakivskyi’s scholarly contribution in these words:
“In his works, we find not only methodological guidance but also examples of its application to the most important questions concerning law and the state. Kistiakivskyi did particularly much to reveal the cultural value of law and its application to both the political and social order.”
“The publication of this work in Ukraine is about restoring historical justice. Everything that has been taken from us must be brought back into Ukrainian discourse and enrich Ukrainian scholarship. There can be no statute of limitations on this process, and the Foundation will continue to support projects of this kind,” said Andriy Stelmashchuk, Director of Dr. Kisil Memorial Fund.
Bohdan Kistiakivskyi’s “Social Sciences and Law” is available to pre-order at osnovypublishing.com
